100 Years of Excellence at NPS
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Naval Postgraduate School, a century of Excellence in Education. The university will proudly celebrate this landmark achievement with special events and activities all year long. Currently in the works is an astronaut reunion and military aviation salute, as well as an Energy Fair highlighting NPS’ future as a more sustainable campus, and a Centennial time capsule. We have also planned a Spanagel Plaza renovation and rededication, military Birthday Balls, Remembrance Dinners, and student, faculty, staff, appreciation events. It’s a great year to be a part of NPS! The yearlong celebration has begun and will continue through Memorial Day 2010. Please join us in celebrating NPS’ historical milestone! We invite you to visit the campus in scenic Monterey during our Centennial year and attend one of our many events.

In commemoration of NPS’ 100th anniversary year, 2009-2010, NPS is
burying a time capsule in the center of Spruance Plaza in the academic
quad of the campus in Monterey. The time capsule and its contents will
offer a hands-on look at what life was like on campus, in the
community, in the nation and globally in 2010. Students, faculty, and
staff 100 years from now will learn of the achievements, advances,
challenges, values, and opinions of the Naval Postgraduate School in
its first century, the mark of our first 100 years. Learn more here.
NASA Space Enrichment Lecture

NASA astronaut Captain Alan “Dex” Poindexter, USN, returns to NPS during our Centennial Finale to talk about his most recent mission to the International Space Station, STS-131, the 33rd shuttle mission to the International Space Station.
The seven person crew aboard the space shuttle Discovery delivered a multi-purpose logistics module filled with science racks to be transferred to laboratories on the International Space Station. The mission conducted three six-and-a-half-hour-long spacewalks to replace an ammonia tank assembly, retrieved a Japanese experiment from the station’s exterior and switched out a rate gyro assembly on the S0 element of the station’s truss.
Poindexter is an NPS Alumnus, having received a graduate degree in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1995. NPS is the global leader in space systems education, with 38 NASA astronaut alumni, and is an integral member of the local and regional community for space-related outreach and education.
If you’d like to attend this event, please register in advance.
